Koroit man Joe McCosh came across this photograph last week when he was looking through images taken by his cousin more than a month ago.
“Something looks really odd,” Mr McCosh told The Standard in an email.
The photograph shows Mr McCosh standing in his backyard at night having a cigarette. A bright, saucer-shaped object sits just above his head in the background, with rays appearing to come from its base.
“My friend seems to think it may be a UFO as, around the same time, people within the area had all thought they had heard strange noises,” Mr McCosh said.
“I have my suspicions as well, as I do remember those weird noises and I’m pretty sure it was the same night this pic was taken.”
“I only came across this the other day and thought you guys should see it.”
Mr McCosh described the noises as unique: “There were sudden bursts of large noises like a large foreign engine and then there were small crackling noises. I remember this because we were outside having a smoke when we heard it.”
He said one of his mates, Sam Dwyer of Port Fairy, heard similar sounds on another night.
The unexplained “big bang” was heard across the district about 1am on Thursday, April 14.
Residents reported the loud, roaring noise shook their houses and windows and set off car alarms while others described colourful flashes or fast-moving lights in the sky.
The Astronomical Society of Victoria said at the time it was likely the bang and the flashes of light were caused by a meteor which had exploded in the atmosphere.
