OLYMPIC silver medallist Megan Jones knows what it takes to train a champion horse and after a week of study in the south-west, she'll know how to breed one too.
Jones already runs a successful breeding program at her family's Adelaide Hills property which produced Jester, the horse she rode to claim silver in the team equestrian event at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, but the 33-year-old was at South West Institute of TAFE's Glenormiston campus this week to learn more.
"It's a good college, really good facilities," she said
Jones has been riding horses since she was five and has been learning 'on the job' since she became involved in breeding Irish sport horses since she was a teenager.
"Mum always wanted a horse when she was a kid so they decided to get one when we moved to the hills and it's just become a passion for me," she said.
While in the south-west the Olympian said she planned to drop into Camperdown's Lakes and Craters three-day equestrian competition ? the event she won riding Jester in 2007 to qualify for her first Olympics.
"I went to the Olympic Games in '96 as a groom for Wendy Schaeffer and she won gold and I said then and there, 'next time I went to the Games it would be on a team as a rider'," she recalled.
Jones placed fourth in her individual event but won a silver in the team equestrian event.
"It was amazing, I had such a good time and the horse did well," she said.
"I really enjoyed it because I treated it like any other event. I just had fun and did the best I could."
Jones said she "absolutely" had her sights set on the 2012 London Olympics but was first concentrating on next year's World Championships.
