Roll up to Logans and you'll see a show

THEY might have been slow to arrive but the south-west's southern right whale population is now putting on a reliable show.

Scores of keen whale-spotters from around Victoria and beyond have been flocking to Logans Beach every day and few have been disappointed.

Department of Sustainability and Environment senior biodiversity officer Mandy Watson confirmed eight southern right whales were spotted at Logans Beach last weekend.

"This is a high number for Logans Beach, particularly as most of these whales are single adults rather than cow/calf pairs," Ms Watson said yesterday.

"We still have one cow/calf pair at Logans Beach.

"The other adult whales appear to have been adults engaged in mating activities."

An aerial search for a humpback whale which was seen tangled in cray pot lines last week enabled wildlife officers to spot several whales along the coastline, she said.

On Thursday, three southern rights including a mother and calf were seen off Logans Beach.

Yesterday, the mother and calf were easily visible for most of the morning.
