P-plater does 179kph after drinking

18 Jan, 2010 09:32 AM
A P-PLATE driver has lost his licence and had his car impounded after he was caught doing almost 80kph over the speed limit with alcohol in his system in Coleraine yesterday.

The Portland man was detected on radar travelling at 179kph on the Coleraine-Edenhope Road about 9.50am.

He was breath-tested and recorded a blood-alcohol reading of 0.032. The young driver, who was with his girlfriend, told police that he was speeding to overtake another car.

His licence was suspended immediately and his 2008 Holden utility impounded under hoon laws for 48 hours.

He is expected be charged on summons with offences, including driving at a dangerous speed and exceeding the prescribed concentration of alcohol.
