A TRIAL limiting the serving of shots and high-alcohol content drinks in Warrnambool's nightclubs will be extended indefinitely.
Galle ry nightclub manager Alison Bonjer and Whalers Inn manager Basil Kaladis yesterday confirmed the trial had been so successful they had adopted the trial guidelines permanently. The eight-week trial was due to end this weekend.
Warrnambool police Senior Sergeant Paul Hargreaves said police would crunch numbers in the next couple of weeks to assess the trial's impact on assaults and crimes.
He said early indications were that the trial had been positive.
``When it finishes we'll analyse the results and report back,'' he said.
``Already one part of the program has been pleasing with the Liquor Licensing Accord (LLA) adopting the policy of one shot of alcohol per person per serving,'' he said.
Senior Sergeant Hargreaves said he was pleased the nightclub managers continued to be at the cutting edge in the responsible serving of alcohol.
``We spoke at the LLA meeting last week about the trial and the feedback was very positive,'' he said.
``The nightclubs have been aware that police have been watching premises and speaking to patrons. The preliminary figures look quite favourable but we'll need to drill down further into the statistics,'' he said.
Ms Bonjer said she was delighted the positive feedback at the LLA meeting had led to the adoption of a one shot per serve policy in other licensed premises.
``The trial has not had a detrimental effect on our trade and police have been very pleased with the results and behaviour of people in the street,'' Ms Bonjer said.
Adopting the trial guidelines will include restricting high-strength or double-strength drinks in areas of the nightclubs after 1am.
