POLICE detected 948 speeding drivers and booked 54 for being over the blood-alcohol limit across the south-west during the Summer Stay blitz.
They conducted a total of 40,321 breath tests in the Warrnambool, Portland and Hamilton districts during the 52-day enforcement campaign from November 18 to January 8 which targeted speed, alcohol and distracted drivers.
Figures provided to The Standard yesterday also showed 95 motorists who were either disqualified or unlicensed were detected and 85 caught using mobile phones while driving.
Detailed figures are: Warrnambool police region — 30 drink-driving, 20,825 breath tests, 43 disqualified/unlicensed, 352 speeding, 37 seatbelts, 34 mobile phones.
Southern Grampians police region — 24 drink-driving, 19,496 breath tests, 52 disqualified/unlicensed, 596 speeding, 47 seatbelts, 51 mobile phones.
Head of road policing Deputy Commissioner Kieran Walshe said although the campaign was over, police were not taking a break. “As always, we will be out on roads across the state targeting speed, distraction, fatigue and drink and drug driving,” he said.
