A CANBERRA student is welcoming the mild weather during his unicycle ride along the Great Ocean Road to Adelaide.
Mark Lavis, 20, said despite the brisk weather conditions in the past couple of days that a night spent about 700 metres above sea level in the Great Dividing Range was by far the coolest.
``But it's not so bad,'' he said yesterday, while on the road between Peterborough and Port Fairy.
The Canberra international relations student is riding to raise awareness of an Afghanistan disadvantaged children's charity - www.afghanmmcc.org.
``It' s nice weather for a ride,'' he said.
``The wind hasn't been that bad. It was worst from Sale to Sorrento, I was heading straight into a headwind.''
Mr Lavis left Canberra on June 20 and hopes to arrive in Adelaide on July 20.
He said his biggest day had been covering 90km in the Cann River area but he was averaging between 65-70km each day.
He's been forced to travel light with his backpack containing only a one-man tent, sleeping bag, clothes, a gas cooker, water bladder and some food.
``I've been riding a unicycle about four years. I took it up after finishing exams and not having much to do and since then it's become a bit of an obsession,'' Mr Lavis admitted.
``This bike I'm on is a touring unicycle. It has a larger wheel but still no gears so wherever you go you have to pedal, even downhill.''
He rated the Great Ocean Road scenery as the most stunning on his trip so far.
Mr Lavis said he was not collecting money and any donations to the Afghan children's charity had to be made through the website.
