FLUORIDE could soon be added to bottled water, but don't expect the city's only independent bottled water provider to offer products containing the controversial chemical.
Food Standards Australia-New Zealand is recommending bottled water companies be allowed to add fluoride to selected products .
But Warrnambool's Coastal Pure Water, which sources and bottles water locally, will not be supporting the move.
"If anyone wants to have fluoride, it is readily available from their doctor or dentist," owner Jamie Harry said yesterday.
The reverse osmosis process the company uses removes most naturally-occurring fluoride from collected water, which is sourced from the Otways.
The firm will not offer any fluoridated water if the current ban is lifted. Since the government announced last year that the city's water supply would be fluoridated, Mr Harry said he has seen people's knowledge about water increase.
Pure water sales have risen, with many homes across the region installing filtration systems to clean their drinking water.
Australasian Bottled Water Institute executive director Tony Gentile said that consumers wanted choice.
"Many of our consumers currently purchase bottled water as they wish to avoid consuming fluoride and it is important that they always be given a choice," he said.
"Fluoridated bottled water brands will be clearly marked as such on the front panel of containers."
The recommended maximum level of fluoride in bottled water is the same as the level of fluoride currently permitted in public water supplies.
