Net push for city council debates

18 Mar, 2010 04:00 AM
COUNCIL debates could soon be coming to you live via the internet if a suggestion by a city councillor comes to fruition.

Warrnambool City councillor Peter Hulin believes residents would take more interest in local government if it was easier for them to see and hear the council table action via an electronic link with the outside world.

"If this council is genuine about having a transparent council there should be no fear in going on the internet, he said.

"My basic idea is to open the council up more and let people hear and see the debate or lack of it. Maybe this council can show leadership by setting a trend for the state."

He has given notice of a motion on the internet idea to be put to the next council meeting on March 29.

The motion also calls for a transcript of council debates to be placed on the council website . Cr Hulin said preliminary costings on equipment needed for live streaming on the internet showed the cost would be minimal.

This is another waste of money, you just have to watch the ABC to see the banter that is played out by the politians. We dont need to see councillors trying to play to the cameras but they should be required to have a press representative present at the meeting to record an unbias report of the proceedings vai the local paper
