MOUNTAIN bike enthusiasts will have a racing trail in Warrnambool after a deal was struck to access the Thunder Point Coastal Reserve.
The Warrnambool Mountain Bike Club has approval from the city council for limited access to existing trails through the reserve.
The permit, which takes effect from next month when daylight savings is introduced, has been issued with conditions including where the club can ride and the days and times it can conduct events.
Environmental factors have also been considered by Victorian Environment Minister Ryan Smith, with the club committed to cleaning up the site, including removing the woody weed and revegetation.
Club committee member Jeff Mutsaers said the development would help the sport's juniors develop their skills and stay involved in mountain bike racing.
"One of the key reasons we're doing this is for the juniors. Adults can get themselves to places like Forrest, Mount Clay or the You Yangs to ride decent tracks. Kids don't always have that option," Mr Mutsaers said.
"Thunder Point is an ideal place to develop juniors because of its accessibility and it's quite a technical track, so it's a great place to learn how to ride." The club is finalising plans for a junior development program on Thursdays and races on Friday evenings.
"We can confirm that the racing format will be time trials with a focus on participants of all ages competing against themselves and improving their times, at the same time as improving their skills," Mr Mutsaers said.
"The aim of this format is to attract new and inexperienced riders, young and old, to introduce them to the sport of mountain biking."
