Mighty trek ends with cheers to the Missus

CHAMPAGNE was flowing in Port Fairy yesterday as Harold Blake, 84, completed a 520-kilometre cycling epic in honour of his wife and the good times they shared by the Moyne River.

The former shearer from Stawell, who spent many a happy season with his wife June at a farm in Toolong, was thrilled to reach the river mouth at Port Fairy.

"Whenever anyone talked about riding from the Murray to the Moyne, I thought I should have done it when I was younger," said Mr Blake.

Until he started his training regime six months ago, Mr Blake had hardly ridden a bike in more than 60 years.

"But then I thought, 'oh bugger it, I'll get a bike and I'll ride it on my own anyway," he said.

Mr Blake set off on the six-day trek from Swan Hill last week in a bid to raise about $20,000 for a new lounge room at his Stawell retirement village.

The first day, which saw Mr Blake ride 60 kilometres in 38 degree heat, was not a good start.

"I was like a Christmas turkey - I was half cooked and well stuffed," he laughed.

The challenging ride had extra emotional meaning for Mr Blake, who spent three painful years nursing his wife June until she lost her battle with Alzheimers two years ago.

"It was just this bloody Moyne (River) that had me," he said.

"I had such a good time here with the Missus."

He still has proud memories of shearing 214 sheep in one day at the Toolong property in the mid-1940s while his wife cooked for the team of shearers.

Mr Blake's son, Martin, joined his father on the final leg from Hawkesdale to Port Fairy.

"He's been riding non-stop for about six months and he's actually very fit and strong so there's no way I could keep up with him," said Martin Blake, who is a sports reporter at The Age.

Mr Blake's grandson, Sydney Swans midfielder Jude Bolton, also joined the determined rider earlier in the journey as he rolled into his home town of Stawell, where a signed Swans jumper was put under the hammer to support his grandfather's mission.

Mr Blake had no plans to retire to his lounge chair just yet.

"I could ride another hundred (kilometres), but I'm glad I don't have to."
