THE Midfield Group is hoping to get the go-ahead to sell alcohol from its retail outlet in Warrnambool's industrial estate.
The Meat Barn, which already sells a range of meat and vegetables, has applied to Liquor Licensing Victoria to be able to sell packaged alcoholic drinks from its Scott Street premises.
News of the application emerged in a public notice published in The Standard on Saturday.
The company's Dean McKenna said the application was in response to several customer requests.
"People come in there asking for items that complement the meat," he said.
"One of the items that people are asking for is alcohol. I just thought that we'd attempt to get a licence."
Mr McKenna stressed that, if successful, the Meat Barn's liquor sales would be "very small scale".
He said the licence would most likely be used to sell cleanskin wines with various meats.
The licence would allow the business to offer "meal deals", he said.
"If someone wants an eye fillet with vegies, we can say to them, 'this wine complements it'." Asked if the business had plans to sell slabs of beer, Mr McKenna said "probably not".
The public notice informed the public that they can object to the application on the grounds that it would detract from the amenity of the area and/or be conducive to the abuse of alcohol.
All objections, which will be treated as public documents, must state their reasons.
