Man in custody over attack

27 Nov, 2009 04:00 AM
A WARRNAMBOOL man who allegedly went to his girlfriend's home on Wednesday and caused more than $10,000 damage is now in custody after appearing in court yesterday.

Jacob Matthew Evans, 21, of Morack Avenue, indicated through defence counsel Carolyn Howe he would plead guilty to some offences.

He has been charged with aggravated burglary, causing criminal damage, trespass, resisting police and two counts of unlawful assault, although some of the charges may be altered or dropped.

Ms Howe said it was hoped the charges could be heard in the Warrnambool County Court's next sitting which starts in January.

The case has been adjourned for a further hearing on January 18 in the Warrnambool Magistrates Court and Mr Evans remains in custody after yesterday not making an application for bail. Mr Evans and a woman have been in a relationship for the past six months.

Police allege that about 1pm on Wednesday he went to his girlfriend's home with thee other men about 1pm and confronted her about rumours she was pregnant - which were false.

Mr Evans claimed to have picked up his clothes but threatened to smash the place up before leaving.

Police allege that at 2.15pm Mr Evans walked back to the house, smashed a lounge room window to gain entry and then smashed large holes in walls and windows in every room.

The repair bill is expected to be more than $10,000. Police were called and Mr Evans was arrested.

Police claim Mr Evans was highly agitated and he refused to get in a police divisional van.

He allegedly abused police, thrashed about and had to be struck with a police baton before being put in the van.

He suffered a cut to his head.

Police said the alleged victim was in the home at the time the damage was caused and was so fearful she has fled to South Australia.

Police have applied for an intervention order and Mr Evans is alleged to have made admissions to the offending.

He allegedly told police he smashed the place up in an effort to get the woman to move out.
