A WARRNAMBOOL teenager charged with doing burnouts in front of the city's police station while officers and his parents watched has been remanded in custody after appearing in court yesterday.
Grant Janeway, 19, of Davis Street, is charged with reckless conduct endangering serious injury, driving in a manner dangerous, four counts of careless driving, driving while disqualified and breaching a defect notice.
Mr Janeway was arrested just after midnight on Saturday, January 2, when he was handed in to police by his father.
From about 8pm to 9.10pm on Saturday, police allege they received five calls from concerned members of the public about Mr Janeway's driving, which included performing burnouts across both lanes on Koroit Street, Garden Street and Fitzroy Road.
Police allege they then contacted Mr Janeway by phone and told the accused they were aware of his alleged conduct and advised him to hand himself in to police.
Mr Janeway then allegedly performed burnouts in front of the Warrnambool police station and courthouse on Koroit Street while his parents and police watched. A number of pedestrians were also on Koroit Street at the time.
Police allege Mr Janeway had two passengers in the car during his alleged offending but they were yet to be identified.
Mr Janeway was also charged with driving while disqualified and exceeding a 40kmh speed limit for an alleged incident on October 25 and assault after an alleged incident on October 16.
The magistrates court heard Mr Janeway was disqualified from driving in June, 2009, for nine months and served a four-month intensive corrections order for those driving offences.
Magistrate Ian von Einem refused bail, saying Mr Janeway posed an "unacceptable risk" to the public.
"My concerns are you are going to behave like this again if you are released," Mr von Einem said.
"Your behaviour seems to me to be out of control.
"I think the community would be in jeopardy."
Mr Janeway will appear in court again on January 18.
