Look, it's mother and child!

BRAVING the icy winds at Logans Beach yesterday was worth the effort for youngsters Kate and Lucy Joseland, who spotted what experts hope will be this winter's first pair of resident southern right whales at the nursery.

The Joseland sisters, who were visiting Warrnambool from Melbourne, were among many who spotted the adult mother and calf frolicking just metres off the beach yesterday.

It was the second time in three days the whales had been seen at the whale nursery, raising hopes the mysterious mammals may settle in the weeks ahead.

Department of Sustainability and Environment's senior natural resource management officer (biodiversity), Mandy Watson, said she believed the whales were the same ones spotted at Barwon Heads last week.

"Then they disappeared from that area and this is the first time we have been able to confirm the same whales in a different location," Ms Watson said.

The relatively lean mother had the same calosite patterns to the whale seen at Barwon Heads, she said.

The pair were first spotted at Logans Beach on Tuesday afternoon.

Ms Watson said the calf, which is thought to have been born at Barwon Heads about two weeks ago, seemed to be playing around with its mother just off the beach.

The whales were last seen off Grannys Grave about 1pm yesterday.
