Junior footy coach in drunken fight at Christmas party

23 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
AN East Warrnambool junior football coach is expected to receive a community corrections order tomorrow after resisting arrest following a Christmas party last year.

Clinton William May, 31, of Laverock Road, pleaded guilty in the Warrnambool Magistrates Court to a large number of offences.

Those charges included assaulting police, being drunk, refusing to state his name and address, acting in a manner prejudicial to a good order of a police jail, refusing to leave licensed premises, using threatening words and six counts of resisting police.

Magistrate Ian von Einem told May that police officers were not punching bags for every drunk in town.

He said it was clear from May's prior convictions that he wanted to take on police after he had been drinking alcohol.

May is being assessed for a community corrections order and will be sentenced at 9.30am tomorrow.

Mr von Einem indicated he would sentenced May to a community corrections order combined with either a suspend jail sentence or fine.

May told the court he had not had anything to drink since being arrested after a Christmas party in December last year. He said he did not have alcohol issues, but did have five beautiful children and he wanted to be a role model for them.

Defence counsel Jonathan Makary said May was an East Warrnambool junior football coach three days a week during the winter season and his client was a respected member of the community.

Police alleged that on December 10 last year May attended a Christmas party at the Flying Horse Bar and Brewery on Raglan Parade. About 11.40pm he was drunk, refused to leave when requested and was escorted from the premises.

He gave a false name and date of birth to police before becoming aggressive and it eventually took six officers to make the arrest.

He kicked out at police and threatened officers and their families.

In the police cells he ripped up a cushion, tried to block the sink and flood the cell and refused to be interviewed.

Mr Makary admitted to the court that in the past his client had got into trouble when he drank alcohol to excess.

Telling kids to kick a footy doesn't make you a respected member of the community... However getting punched by someone that tells kids to kick a footy while trying to do your job does. Zero tolerance of anyone that assaults our police members, no ifs. no buts

He has not been a coach or player at East Warrnambool since 2009

What a role model he thinks he is. Gets drunk, lies to Police, fights people when he doesnt get what he wants, and then destroys others property.

I look forward to the day his kids follow in his footsteps...not.

Another thug that rewrites the short term history, maybe the courts prior history should be part of the newspaper report?

Defence counsel Jonathan Makary up on purjory charges then, if he hasn't been at East for 3 years? Nice journalism by the Standard, as well.

Just because his lawyer says he is a "respected member of the community" that makes him one? I am a member of the community and I have no respect for him at all. Even if he has been a junior football coach sometime in the past what has that got to do with assaulting Police and damaging property?

If "east" comment is correct and he hasn't been a coach since 2009, why would this be in the story? Ed?

We're currently investigating whether the court has been misled in this matter.

Why is it that if you assault someone in this community there is no period of reprieve. Be Damned if my son is going to grow up in a society where our judicial system condones acts of violence by handing down Minimal Sentences.
