HAWKESDALE P-12 College pupils got to know John Brumby yesterday without the Premier even leaving Melbourne.

The 280-kilometre distance was no barrier for Mr Brumby when he conducted an interactive blogging lesson from Richmond Primary School with Hawkesdale's tech-savvy pupils.

Educatio n Minister Bronwyn Pike and Telstra chief executive Sol Trujillo were also at Richmond Primary to take part in the blogging exercise.

Hawkes dale Information Technology teacher Anne Mirtschin said the 20-minute blogging exercise between the two schools was one of the first of its kind in Australia.

"The kids have gained a greater interest in information technology through blogging and they love to look up the statistics on how many people have read their blogs," she said.

Ms Mirtschin said the communication with the Premier was an indication of the growing importance that computers had in the classroom.

"The students got to communicate with him and he told them that he supports blogging in schools and asked what the weather was like here in Hawkesdale," she said.

Mr Brumby said from Richmond that almost 1600 Victorian Government schools already enjoyed high-speed broadband.

"Victorian students everywhere will now be able to access and share information and online resources nearly two-and-a-half times faster, making communication and knowledge-sharing between schools virtually instant," he said.

All Victorian Government schools will undergo a major broadband upgrade to increase their high-speed broadband capacity.
