Irish drink-driver in a hurry for fast food

07 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
AN Irish tourist in a hurry to get fast food was clocked driving at 143km/h near Illowa on Saturday night.

Senior Constable Craig Tobias, of Koroit police, said the 29-year-old Irishman was driving from Port Fairy to Warrnambool for food when he was recorded travelling at 143km/h about midnight on the section of the Princes Highway known as the ‘mad mile’.

The Irishman, who is working in Port Fairy, also recorded a blood-alcohol reading of .09.

He will lose his driver’s licence for six months.

He also received two penalty notices with fines totalling more than $900.

Senior Constable Tobias said it was mind-boggling that anyone would travel at such a speed, regardless of the time, and after consuming alcohol.
