SHE was a champion netballer, the friendly face behind the store counter and, in her 90th year, carried the baton in the Commonwealth Games baton relay.
Popular Warrnambool identity Dorothy Agnes "Dot" Brown, died in her sleep on Monday aged 92.
She was born at Ouyen on August 6, 1916, the fifth of eight daughters to Isabella and John McDonald.
The family moved to Warrnambool when she was five.
Together with her husband Bill, Mrs Brown ran a general store at Allansford for 33 years before moving to Warrnambool in 1966, where she spent her remaining working years at Chittick's Bakery.
Mrs Brown was a champion netballer with Nestles and Allansford Green and helped win four consecutive Country Week titles in Melbourne with the Warrnambool team, later being honoured with a life membership of the Warrnambool and District Netball Association.
She spent her later years brightening the lives of many Lyndoch and hospital patients with her cheerful visits.
After one of her many walks along the promenade she advised the city council engineers that the seats should have backs on them to accommodate the elderly - the engineers commenting she was probably too active to need the seats herself.
In 2006, when she was 89, Mrs Brown proudly took part in the Commonwealth Games Queen's baton relay.
One of her greatest passions was taking part in the annual Relay For Life cancer fund-raiser.
She went to exercise classes at the Archie Graham centre three times a week for circuit training as well as the social contact. Her final visit was last Friday.
Mrs Brown is survived by her daughters Shirley, Jeannie, Lois and Pam and five grandchildren.
Family and friends are invited to a thanksgiving service at the Walsh Reception Centre, Davidson Oval, at 1pm today.
