Fire forces demolition of 93-year-old building

01 Jul, 2008 05:00 AM
NEARLY a century of history came crashing down in Camperdown yesterday with the iconic Martin's Corner building demolished.

The 93-year-old building was gutted in an arson attack a fortnight ago, forcing the historic structure to be pulled down.

Corangamite Shire Council ordered the demolition after finding the intense heat of the fire had destroyed the brickwork and left the facade without any support.

The two-storey building housed Tower Computer Aid, which is now trading from a temporary site on Church Street.

Owner Rob Van den Eynde told The Standard he planned to re-build on the Manifold Street site.

``Our priority has been to get the building down and get it (the site) safe,'' he said yesterday.

``We can look to the future now.''

Mr Van den Eynde will meet with the shire in the coming weeks to discuss the future use of the site.

Police believe the fire, which cast an orange glow over the town, was deliberately lit.

Colac Criminal Investigation Unit is seeking witnesses or people with any information about the crime to contact the station.
