A MOTORING enthusiast with a penchant for powerful cars will be off the road for four months after losing control at a Portland intersection.
Andrew Araldi, 30, of the Princes Highway, Bolwarra, pleaded guilty to careless driving, improper use of a vehicle and failing to provide information.
Portland Magistrates Court heard he was driving his Holden Senator along the Cape Nelson Road about 5.15pm on August 5 last year and accelerated heavily while entering Edgar Street.
Araldi then lost control of the car and hit a fence.
Five days earlier, on July 31, he hosted a barbecue and was called outside by police after reports of a car doing burn-outs in the street.
Araldi refused to tell officers who had been driving.
Defence counsel Wayne Henwood said his client disputed that his car had been used for the manoeuvre, despite police reports of tyre marks and shredded rubber in the home's driveway.
He said Araldi was hard work?ing and volunteered for a baseball club and the South Coast Drag Racing Association.
Magistrate Jonathan Kle?stadt said the 30-year-old needed to work harder to control his behaviour.
"You have a poor driving history ? it seems to indicate that every now and then, for whatever reason, you decide the law doesn't apply to you," he said.
Mr Klestadt convicted Araldi for careless driving and improper use and fined him $750. He did not convict on the charge of failing to provide information, saying a two-year licence disqualification seemed unfair . Araldi was instead ordered to pay a further $500, with $66.60 in costs, in addition to the four-month licence suspension.
