Fashions feature at Camperdown Cup

23 Jan, 2012 03:00 AM
COMMUNITY support is the key to a successful country race meeting.

After more than 2500 people attended the annual Camperdown Cup on Saturday, Camperdown Turf Club president Laurie Hickey knows this first-hand.

“We only have the one meeting a year and the community certainly rallied behind it,” he told The Standard.

“It was considered by everyone to be a fantastic day.

“It was a typical country, no fuss race meeting.”

Racegoers from around the region and as far away as Melbourne and Echuca witnessed Camperdown trainer Geoff Daffy’s short-priced favourite Population take out the feature race.

Fifty-one women entered the fashions on the field ladies’ category, with Glen Huntly’s Renee Harrison winning a weekend’s stay at the Wyndham Resort in Torquay.

“It was the biggest we’ve ever had. It’s growing in popularity too,” Mr Hickey said of the fashions contest.

“A lot of people like to show off their creations.

“It was certainly the highlight of the day for many, many people.”

The family-friendly atmosphere allowed families with children to enjoy picnic lunches on the lawn, with a record number of umbrella and hospitality packages sold.

Mr Hickey said he had received glowing feedback about the clean amenities, the state of the track and the efficiency of the seven-race program.

“We’re buoyed by the success of the meeting,” Mr Hickey said.

“We’ve got ideas in place to make next year’s just as good, if not better.”

You want more community support??

For an event that mainly involves gambling and encourages excessive alcohol consumption as the main reason for attending?

And all this at a stage when the community wants increased control on alcohol-involved incidents and gambling addiction that causes so much hurt to the community.

Heres an idea, make it free to enter, give away soft drink and water to all that ask: for free.

Huh - I agree. Most people who go to the races don't even see a race ... they go to be seen.
