Fallen footballer's radical transplant wish

AARON Davis faces a $20,000 personal fund-raiser so he can have radical surgery, which relies on an organ donor, and play sport again.

The 22-year-old's football career was cut short four years ago when he tore his anterior crucial ligament (ACL) in his left leg.

After two knee reconstructions and two failed attempts at returning to the field, the Camperdown man is facing a life without sport or going under the knife a third time so he can put on the boots once more.

"There's nothing worse that sitting on the sidelines," Davis said.

"I love sport. I can't live without it."

Davis, also a cricket and basketball fanatic, looked set to have a promising football career, playing his first senior Hampden league game with Camperdown at 16.

But his dreams were shattered two year's later in a reserves clash with Cobden.

In the heat of battle, his ACL tore during a tackle.

"It was pretty disappointing. I was 18," the painter and decorator said.

After a visit to a specialist, a knee reconstruction and 10 months rest, Davis returned to the field.

But his comeback was shortlived, lasting no longer than his first training session.

"I went up for a mark, then came down to take off and it (the knee) popped out again.

"I was shattered."

His uncle, Geelong assistant coach Ken Hinkley, advised him to visit another specialist who treated AFL players.

Davis underwent surgery again, this time having bone transplanted from his knee to his hip.

"I had a lot of physio and was out 15-16 months. I returned to training again.

"I can remember it was a clear night and I kicked the football, nothing special, and it snapped again."

His doctor has advised him against playing sport again.

But Davis is saving up to have another reconstruction - this time having a bone and ACL transplant from an organ donor.

"Ken (Hinkley) is a bit sketchy about it but he says if I want to play again I know what I've got to do -- strengthen my muscles up and make sure and be really committed.

"Beau Muston, who plays for Hawthorn, has had his third knee reconstruction and he is the same age as me and is playing AFL."
