Doctors throw hats in Liberals' ring

02 Jun, 2009 04:00 AM
PLENTY of doctors look set to be in the house when the Liberal Party begins its preselection process for the seat of Wannon.

Two veterinarians yesterday emerged as potential successors for outgoing MP David Hawker.

Mr Hawker revealed on Sunday that he would not seek to extend his 26-year career beyond the current term.

Corangamite Shire councillor Matt Makin and Southern Grampians' Katrina Rainsford said they were considering contesting the seat, which holds a 7.5 per cent margin.

Mr Hawker's announcement has also prompted early discussion among prospective Labor candidates in Wannon, including Antony Moore, who challenged Mr Hawker in 2007.

The Liberal hopefuls' interest won praise from state Liberal MP and former veterinarian Denis Napthine.

He said their civic experience put them in good stead for life in federal politics.

"Local government is significant and helpful," Dr Napthine said.

"What's important is that you have an involvement and understanding of the community.

"There are a number of high quality candidates for preselection and Matt Makin's name has been thrown around.

"There also could be another vet with Katrina."

Cr Makin is yet to make a firm decision, while Cr Rainsford said she was happy to take on the challenge.

"My main goal is to get rid of the Rudd Government and be part of the renewal of the Liberals and Coalition," she said.

"The gloss of the Rudd Government has gone and the Liberals need to put more shine into forming an alternative (government)."

Cr Rainsford is a mother-of-four and has 12 years' experience in local government.

In 1995, she was named Western Victorian Rural Woman of the Year.

Cr Makin said entering federal politics was not a decision he was taking lightly.

"It is something I would like to consider," the former Australian Veterinary Association president said.

"This community is facing some enormous challenges at a local level and a national level and the people of Wannon deserve a parliamentary representative who is dedicated to addressing these issues."

Western Victoria MP John Vogels backed a bid by Mr Makin.

"Matt would be an excellent candidate. He understands rural issues and communities at a grassroots level," he said.

Preselections open today and close on June 30.

Liberal sources expect several contenders across Wannon to step forward and the plebiscite is expected in August-September.

It will be open to all financial Liberal Party members of 12 months or more, under a revamped system.

Previously, the delegate-based system meant only about 10 per cent of members had a say on who won preselection. The new system will allow more than 1000 members to contribute to the decision.

Union official and ALP hopeful Antony Moore said he respected Mr Hawker's contribution but "it was time for him to move on".

"I'll definitely put my hand up and go through the pre-selection process but that hasn't started yet," he said.
