Dobbers too quick off the mark

13 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
YOU'D feel like a bit of an idiot if you rang police to dob in speeding motorists, only to get booked for speeding yourself when police turned up to investigate.

But that's exactly what has been happening recently, prompting police to urge drivers to observe speed limits where they live.

Warrnambool traffic management unit chief Sergeant Gary Bryant said there had been cases recently where residents who rang in to complain about speedsters were then themselves booked when officers later arrived to monitor traffic.

Sergeant Bryant said a significant number of drivers were booked recently in a local rural area. "A lot who we booked lived in the town and included those who initially complained to police about speeding traffic," he said.

"I won't divulge the name of the town in case people are embarrassed, but it shows how speeding is an issue for police every day.

"A lot of tourists and out-of-towners also are unaware of local limits. We book people every single day for speeding as we patrol the Hamilton and Princes highways and Great Ocean Road every day."

Sergeant Bryant also urged greater observance of road signs after recent bad smashes where inattention had been a factor.

During the recent Summer Stay campaign police detected a total of 948 speeding offences and 54 drink-drivers in the Warrnambool and Southern Grampians regions.

Today they will complete a two-week blitz on truck drivers.
