Deakin students to rally over parking costs

25 Jul, 2011 04:00 AM
DEAKIN University students are rallying to stage a protest after Vice-Chancellor Jane den Hollander announced plans to increase parking fees and eliminate free parking on the Warrnambool and Waurn Ponds campuses.

The major changes to car parking arrangements include increasing the annual fee for blue general parking permits from $203 to $250 for students and increasing fees for daily and hourly permits by 50 per cent.

Cheaper red zone permits ($101.50) will be discontinued and all free parking areas will be converted to paid permit parking.

The changes are set to be introduced from Trimester 1, next year.

The Deakin University Student Association (DUSA) president Kali Watson voiced the concerns of students about the price hike and said a protest against the changes was planned on August 2.

"Our campaign may be disruptive in the interim, but we feel that the university's decision has gone too far," she said.

"If Deakin considers increasing prices then they also need to dramatically increase parking spaces and have a subsidy scheme for students who can't afford $250 for a permit."

Soon after the changes to fees were announced, students established a Deakin University 2012 Parking Price Increase Petition on Facebook.

The group attracted 247 members in less than 12 hours.

In an email to staff and students on Friday, Professor den Hollander said she realised the new arrangements would upset some students and staff but subsidising car parks were costing the university's core business.

"I trust that you will take some time to consider these new arrangements in the light of the need to reduce Deakin's carbon footprint, to release more funds for Deakin's teaching and research activities, and to keep pace with other institutions who are also working hard to reduce the demand for on-site car parking."

She said the changes also aimed to reduce demand for parking on campuses and encourage staff and students to adopt "sustainable transport alternatives" like public transport.

I would wager that the Vice-Chancellor is provided a car and free car park for her role. Perhaps as such a diligent community member she could forego those benefits and also start catching the few busses or ride to work.

How desperate is Deakon to want to charge it's students parking. They have acres of land at Warrnambool campus

Many teenagers don't even bother to further their education, let alone look for work, many go out and find themselves part or full time jobs, and the most motivated go on to uni, and struggle financially to do so, and here is the institution that benefits from their uni fees putting it's hand out to collect more from those who can least afford it.

Give the uni students a break

If this is a decision to reduce carbon why not begin with deakin in Melbourne where adequate public transport exists, not Warrnambool.

I can't beleive that Deakin Uni are trying to charge people to park around the football oval that is the 'Swamp.'

to not have ANY free parking is a joke. Show me evidence that suggests people will stop paying for parking.....the WCC continue to jack up prices and take over free parking areas and yet it's still bloody hard to get a park down the street!

It is ridiculous to treat Warrnambool Campus in the same way as Burwood or Geelong. Simply put there is very little public transport available to Deakin, Warrnambool, something the Vice Chancellor acknowledged in her email to students. I hope Dusa is successful in their protests.

As a uni student at W'bool Deakin, I agree that it is absolutely ridiculous to pay to park there. We go there for a degree and they make us pay simply to leave our car in the parking bays for a few hours each day. Deakin needs to rethink this and help out us struggling uni students

Don't forget the parking price has increased for all staff members also to $400!! Casual/Part time or Fulltime all have to pay the same amount.

An outrageous money making stunt that is a kick to the head for deakin students. Jane makes claims in relation to helping the environment however I doubt she has considered the warrnambool public transport system which simply can't meet the needs of students. They want people to study at the university however once they get them in the door they seem to own your bank accounts and empty your wallet- what's left of the money after paying ever so high child care fees, tuition fees and rip off text books.I hope deakin can get their act together and reverse their decision.

Paying for car-parking is the way of the world. Just because you live in Warrnambool doesn't mean you shouldn't have to pay. It costs money to maintain parking you do realise that? Walk, ride, catch a bus, car pool even and share costs. People are all too happy to complain about carparking fees but then you all drive a car individually and expect to park for free. and as for low income uni students, yes it would be tough financially but it doesn't seem to curve your spending on goon bags.
