Deakin students feel parking pain

26 Jul, 2011 04:00 AM
Students are planning to protest the new parking fees that are set to be introduced at Deakin University next year.

However, the university believes the increase in fees would see the demand for parking fall and allow students and staff to have access to public transport.

Deakin University vice-chancellor Jane den Hollander announced plans to increase annual parking fees to $250 for students and $400 for staff, increase hourly and day parking fees and eliminating free parking across all campuses.

Though the changes are not set to be introduced until the start of trimester one next year, students at the Warrnambool campus received an unexpected setback yesterday with access to the free parking area around the oval closed off.

In her email to students and staff announcing the changes, Professor van Hollander said the move was aimed at reducing demand for parking and encouraged staff and students to consider using alternatives like public transport.

Owner of Transit South West, which run Warrnambool Bus Lines, Stephen Lucas said the company was in the process of applying for state government funding to increase services across the city.

"We run quite a few services to Deakin already," Mr Lucas said.

"We currently have a proposal before the state government to improve transit services in Warrnambool and we are waiting on a reply."

"If we get funding there would be more services to Deakin."

The Deakin University Student Association is planning a protest in August and students have voiced their opposition to the move with 777 people joining the The Deakin University 2012 Parking Price Increase Petition Facebook group.

just saw a guy park his red ford 100m from the entrance to the UNI in the breakdown lane of the Princes Hwy then walk. I hope the parking inspectors find time to write him a ticket.

@justpayit, you are either not a uni student, don't pay for your own parking or aren't like many of us who are trying to study while working 2 jobs just to get by!

I know many people who are just pay it, stop complaining and if you get fined tough, but its not that easy!

Its really hard to scrap together enough money for parking as it is with out having our option of free parking being taken away!

We are doing the only things we can do to make our point known without others who don't understand the struggle many of us are going through opening their yaps!

so parking in the breakdown lane of Australia's biggest highway is the answer is it?. Sounds like you and the driver of the offending car are studying stupidity at Deakin......

It seems the Vice Chancellor is employing the 'Ostrich Management Model' - head in the sand.

I fully agree that it is difficult as a uni student who is independently supporting themselves through a tertiary degree (many of us working two or three jobs), to find the extra money to pay for parking. Students are already expected to pay $5 per day for parking, this is an outrageous expectation when you only have class for 1 hour! I am a struggling uni student and already begrudgingly fork out the $100 plus dollars per year for parking, public transport is no option for me. I know, that like many students, the $250 parking permit for 2012 is going to be a HUGE sting for the hip pocket!!

I am in disbelief that these fees can even be contemplated being imposed on our students. Don't you think these poor kids already have to sacrifice enough to try and scratch their way through getting their education. Every step of the way they are slugged with more senseless expenses. Most cant even afford to fuel a car let alone pay to park it. Those responsible for this crippling decision should hang their heads in shame... how do you sleep at night?

Re justpayit - your arguments are too stupid to even argue back at you. You don't seem to understand the situation at all.

If I, too, are studying stupidity at uni, then I know all about being stupid. Which means, at least I'm more qualified to recongise your stupidity than you are mine.

Workman and truckies park on the side of the road at the entrance all the time, how do you know this was not one of them?

@justpayit how much would you estimate you pay per year for parking? the article has got it slightly wrong, it's not $250 per year, it's $250 per trimester, so for those students studying all year, they're going to have to pay $750 per year just to park their cars.
