STUDENTS at Deakin University are "outraged" their voice may be excluded in the selection of their next vice-chancellor.
Vice-Cha ncellor Sally Walker announced her resignation in December to be effective from midway through this year.
But the Deakin University Student Association's general secretary Zach Smith said neither the chancellor or the Deakin University Council had confirmed the participation of students in the selection of her replacement.
"We have attempted to make contact with the chancellor regarding the selection process, to date he has ignored our communications on numerous occasions," he said.
Mr Smith said not having student representation on the selection panel for a vice-chancellor deviates from the normal selection process at Deakin University and at other universities including Monash, Melbourne and Latrobe.
"Students bring unique perspectives and experiences to vice-chancellor selection panels," he said.
"As a student at Deakin University I would be bitterly disappointed at any decision that lacked the involvement of student representatives.''
The Chancellor of Deakin University David Morgan said a selection panel had been chosen.
"A selection panel, drawn from the university council's membership, and with one external member (Professor Kwong Lee Dow), will bring a recommendation forward to council," he said.
"The process has been discussed with council, the membership of which includes both an undergraduate student, who also happens to be the president of the Deakin University Student Association, and a postgraduate student.
"The selection process is under way and I do not intend to make any further comment regarding this matter."
