YOU usually have to be a winning jockey, trainer or racehorse owner to hold the Melbourne Cup high on the first Tuesday in November after the race that stops a nation at Flemington Racecourse.
Yesterday the coveted trophy, valued at more than $150,000, was in Warrnambool as part of a national pre-race tour along with race caller John Russell and champion jockey, turned trainer Midge Didham who shared their experiences of the race which has its 150th anniversary this year.
Didham rode Baghdad Note to victory in 1970.
The Emirates Melbourne Cup tour is visiting 32 centres across the nation and will be in Birdsville this Friday and Saturday.
Yesterday the cup and tour group visited the Archie Graham Community Centre, Warrnambool College, Warrnambool Primary School and Gillin Park Retirement Village before going to Warrnambool Racing Club for a cocktail party to raise funds for the Peter's Project cancer centre campaign.
