SOUTH-WEST hospitality businesses are continuing to benefit from the unofficial four-day weekend enjoyed by many Melburnians who take a day's leave on Monday to add to their public holiday for the Melbourne Cup.
Most south-west accommodation businesses reported good visitor numbers during the past four days with some saying numbers were up on last year's Melbourne Cup weekend.
Warrnambool's Surf Side Holiday Park manager Alby Lewis said his park received more visitors each year for the unofficial long weekend.
Mr Lewis said a quarter of the park was booked for the past four days, which was higher than for the same time last year.
"There's a lot of Melbourne here," he said.
"Some even take a rostered day off on Friday."
Warrnambool City Council's tourism services manager Peter Abbott said numbers at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village were up during the past four days.
Visitor numbers at the Warrnambool Visitor Information Centre also lifted to about 700 a day - about twice the usual 300-400 visitors.
Corangamite Shire had a public holiday yesterday but Warrnambool, Moyne and Colac-Otway local government areas chose to take the public holiday on another day.
Moyne Shire Council's tourism officer Andrea Lowenthal said a great choice of weekend events in the region such as the Mortlake Cup, the Portland Upwelling Festival and the Dunkeld Mosaic of Arts Festival helped attract people.
Acting co-ordinator of the Twelve Apostles Visitor Information Centre (VIC) at Port Campbell, Nicole Neild, said the centre recorded a six per cent increase in visitor numbers this year compared to the same weekend last year.
Dean Hellessey, owner of the Great Ocean Road Tourist Park at Peterborough, said the Melbourne Cup weekend was traditionally a good one for bookings and proved so again this year.
Forecasts for good weather for the Melbourne Cup weekend usually lifted visitor numbers, he said.
Camperdown Lakes and Crates Holiday Park manager John Chapman said his park was about three-quarters full during the past four days.
The Melbourne Cup weekend "was always a busy weekend" and guests at the park included not only people from Melbourne, but also those from Geelong and Ballarat, he said.
