EAST Warrnambool cricketers are trying not to lose their head as they eye their fund-raising target of $10,000.
This Sunday players from East Warrnambool YCW Cricket Club will shave their heads in support of club secretary Kristy Frew.
She was last year diagnosed with breast cancer.
The club’s impressive fund-raising effort has pushed the total to $7500, topping the McGrath Foundation’s list for most money raised by a country club.
Mrs Frew said this Saturday’s auction was likely to bump the fund-raising total over the club’s target of $10,000.
“There’s over 40 items, and we’re still waiting on a couple,” she said. “We’ve got about 10 items with a reserve but everything else has been donated.”
Cricket Victoria has sent two Bushrangers tops, one signed by the whole team and the other by Aaron Finch.
A Ricky Ponting-signed cricket bat and Adam Gilchrist-signed keeping gloves will also go under the hammer, she said. “We’ve got Glenn McGrath foundation merchandise to be sold Saturday night and Sunday for Pink Stumps Day.
“The rest has been donated by local businesses — gift vouchers, accommodation and goods.”
As part of Pink Stumps Day, three East Warrnambool players will shave their heads, with the fund-raising target passing key fund-raising figures. Ten-year-old Hayley Curtis also put her hand up to lose her locks if the fund-raising hit $10,000. Mrs Frew said Lachie Morrison and Andrew Ferguson would be first to have their heads shaved in Sunday’s tea break. “Troy Wilson’s hair will be gone as well after reaching $7000, and if we get to $10,000 little Hayley will do it too.
“It’ll be good to reach the mark but I’m going to cry.
“She is a gorgeous kid.”
Mrs Frew said the club’s support through her treatment had been overwhelming at times. “I’m doing well and I’m over halfway through my treatment,” she said.
“It’s been fantastic and the East cricket club are like a big family.
“I’m looking forward to it but it’s a bit daunting to see them all bald there.
“It’s for a great cause.
“I have a breast care nurse in Warrnambool and she has been absolutely fantastic.
“All people should be able to access a breast care nurse at all times.”
The auction will be held at the East Warrnambool Cricket Club’s rooms on February 18 from 7.30pm.
