Crash teen doing well after emerging from coma

16 Mar, 2010 04:00 AM
EIGHT days after suffering head injuries in a horrific car accident in Warrnambool, 18-year-old Jarrod King has awakened from his induced coma.

Despite being disorientated and suffering from some amnesia, Jarrod is making good progress, according to his parents Deb and Darren King.

"He's awake and talking but he's still got a long way to go," Mr King said.

His wife added that Jarrod thought he was still in Warrnambool and not the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

"I told him yesterday he's been in the hospital for nine days and he looked at me stupid," Mr King said.

"He just said 'I'm right, go back to the shop'.

"The last 24 hours have been incredible for us. It's amazing to go from what he was to where he is now."

Jarrod has been moved from the intensive care unit to a ward so that he can begin his rehabilitation.

"He's got plenty of movement in his limbs," Mr King said.

"I spoke to the neurosurgeon who operated on him and he said he expects Jarrod to have a full recovery ? he's young and fit and that's always in his favour."

Jarrod was one of five people in a car that rolled over on Aberline Road early on March 6.

He was rushed to the Royal Melbourne Hospital and underwent a two-hour operation to remove a blood clot on his brain.

Mrs King said Jarrod knew he had been in an accident but couldn't remember it happening.

The teenager's Facebook page has been filled with messages from well-wishers and the news that he had come out of his induced coma yesterday sparked another flood of comments from friends.

"The support has been unbelievable," Mr King said.

"We've had offers to do everything. We've been offered accommodation in Geelong.

''We've had house-cleaners offer to clean our house and we've had the lawns done for us."

The family business - the Henna Street milk bar - was being looked after by staff and friends, he said.

He said they were doing an amazing job.

The King family said they were thankful for the support but added Jarrod's doctors have asked for people to refrain from visiting Jarrod until after the weekend to give him time to recuperate and get used to his surroundings.

"The next five days are vital for his rest," Mr King said.
