THREE key roads between Corangamite Shire farms and markets will be upgraded through a $1.34 million project.
Joint council and State Government funding will be used to strengthen pavements on Cooriemungle Road, Cooriemungle, the Timboon-Terang Road and the Dixie-Naroghid Road near Camperdown.
Another $65,000 has been allocated for new decking for the Cooriemungle Creek bridge at Cooriemungle.
Corangamite Shire Mayor Matt Makin said the council was delighted the State Government had recognised the need to improve important produce routes in the shire.
He said the council's share of the Local Roads to Markets Program funding was up nearly 50 per cent on last year's figure of $448,500.
"Our communities rely heavily on our primary producers and money like this being invested in our local roads helps protect all our livelihoods," he said.
Cooriemungle Road farmer Ross Powell, who milks 730 cows on two properties, said the road's pavement was deteriorating and its upgrade was a relief for residents.
"Traffic volume is one of the main issues because the road has become a main thoroughfare from Colac to Port Campbell and Timboon and also from the gas plants down the coast to metropolitan areas," Mr Powell said.
"The bridge has been there a long time and there is a lot of heavy traffic going over it nowadays. That traffic increased dramatically when the gas plants came."
Mr Powell said improvements to the road would benefit milk companies running tankers to and from district milk suppliers.
"My milk goes through to Murray Goulburn at Koroit and the road is a main thoroughfare to many farms to the east and south of us as well," he said.
"I guess what needs to be put in perspective with this funding is that there may be roads that are also in need of repairs, but they perhaps don't have the volumes and heavy traffic going over them that Cooriemungle Road does," Mr Powell said.
