Candlelight vigil to help Nullawarre mend

25 Nov, 2009 03:00 AM
CANDLES will light up the Niranda Recreation Reserve tomorrow night when the extended Nullawarre community comes together to pray for those suffering after last Wednesday's horrific school bus crash.

The gathering will also be an opportunity for the shaken community to share a drink, a picnic rug and maybe a even a laugh.

Pupils from Nullawarre and District Primary School and their families will light a candle and say a prayer for little Jake Croft, 7, and Emily Blake, 10, who both remain in the Royal Children's Hospital.

The event will also acknowledge the physical and emotional toll that the smash had taken on the bus and truck drivers involved.

A spokeswoman for the parents organising the event, Louise Grace, said the accident had sent shockwaves right through the close-knit farming community and prompted a flood of support for the families involved.

"We just want to thank everyone, for the donations that have come to the school - from the people that have come out to play cricket to those who have come to paint the girls' fingernails," she said.

"This is such a small community and a small school. It has had such a huge ripple effect right through the area."

Well-wishers had been calling Nullawarre families from as far as Darwin, Queensland and Perth.

Ms Grace's two children got off the bus just ten minutes before it collided with a tip truck as it exited a driveway onto Moreys Road.

"They (the pupils) have got scars that they will have for a long time so we just want to get everyone together and have a bit of a community event."

Those wanting to attend are asked to bring their own food, drinks and chairs or picnic rugs to the Nirranda Recreation Reserve from 7.30pm.
