The gallery is hosting illustrations by children's author Leigh Hobbs in a display that will continue until June 14 and then reopen for the Fun4Kids Festival from July 1-8.
Old Tom, Horrible Harriet, Mr Chicken and Fiona the Pig are some of the characters that feature in the collection which includes original artworks and prints. Copies of Hobbs' books are also available for reading in the exhibition space.
Gallery education officer Marg Sinnott said the exhibition would complement Education Week activities, National Library Week and the National Year of Reading.
"It is very special to have the Leigh Hobbs exhibition at Warrnambool Art Gallery for an extended period of time, giving local kindergartens, schools, families and visitors plenty of opportunity to visit the gallery, see the artworks and spend some valuable time reading," Ms Sinnott said.
