Banding together in support

25 Nov, 2008 12:00 AM
SOUTH-WEST police officers are expected to be sporting a new fashion statement in support of a campaign to reduce violence against women.

Warrnambool police family violence adviser Sergeant Shane Keogh will be among the 9000 Victorian officers expected to wear a wristband or a ribbon today in support of White Ribbon Day - an international campaign led by men to reduce violence against women.

Sergeant Keogh said White Ribbon Day helped raised awareness of the cause.

In Victoria 25 per cent of all assaults Victoria Police attend are family-violence related.

In Australia, family violence affects one in three women during their lives.

Police attended more than 31,000 family-violence incidents across the state in the last financial year.

Sergeant Keogh said one of the biggest myths surrounding family violence was the concept: "He doesn't mean it, it will get better".

"If someone becomes a victim of family violence we strongly encourage that person to report the matter immediately to police or alternatively, to a support agency," he said.

"If someone witnesses a form of family violence, we strongly recommend to contact police. There's no need for a statement to be given and they can remain anonymous."

White Ribbon Day ambassador Deputy Commissioner Simon Overland said wearing a wristband or ribbon symbolised that people would not condone, commit or stay silent about violence against women.
