LAWN bowls picked up more fans when 29 people with a range of disabilities took to the greens at Warrnambool's City Memorial club yesterday.
The "Bowling is for Everyone" tournament was organised by disabilities diploma graduate Chris Symmonds who said it raised awareness among people with disabilities that many bowls clubs welcomed people with disabilities.
Mr Symmonds said some of the participants in yesterday's tournament already played bowls but most were new to the game.
Most players were from Warrnambool but some travelled from Hamilton.
Mr Symmonds, who plays at the City Memorial club, said people with disabilities played in the local pennant competitions but many people with disabilities did not know they were welcome to take part.
Yesterday's competition of 10 ends was won by Bill Jansen with Gilmore Bates second.
Member for South West Coast Denis Napthine opened the day.
Mr Symmonds said he received assistance from 11 City Memorial Club members and one St John's Club member to run the day with local businesses also contributing prizes and money.
Mr Symmonds said most clubs had coaches willing to teach people how to bowl and held social days when beginners could bowl.
