450 hectares burnt in Mortlake blaze

22 Feb, 2012 06:27 PM
FIRE crews have contained a blaze which burnt about 450 hectares of grassland on the outskirts of Mortlake.

Two water bombing aircraft, which were called in from Colac and Stawell to help tackle the fire, were stood down last night.

Firefighters from the Country Fire Authority and Department of Sustainability and Environment worked on site in the Thulborn Road area, west of the township.

Fifteen units, including tankers, dozers and slip-on units were used to help control the fire.

The CFA and DSE issued an advice alert, warning nearby residents to monitor conditions and check their bushfire survival plan.

"If you do not have a plan, decide what you will do if the situation changes," it warned last night.

Smoke may still be visible from nearby communities and roads.

People experiencing any symptoms that may be due to smoke exposure are being advised by the Department of Health to seek medical advice or call Nurse on Call on 1300 606 024.

A DSE spokesman said the blaze was believed to have started following a planned burn which was lit at the Mortlake common this morning.

The fire flared up about 6.45pm yesterday when it moved beyond control lines. It was declared contained at 9.07pm last night.

Wish the Department of Scorched Earth would drop the word controlled from their description. Or at least learn what the word means, and act accordingly.

Why is anyone trying to burn grass when it is so very dry and we are nearing the end of February? I understand things go wrong but surely the risk here was high.

In my view this whole episode should never have happened. Also very lucky the fire did not get into the nearby pine plantation.

Time for some serious policy changes around grassland burning. There needs to be a change of culture about this in the south west! Who is accountable for this situation?
