A MAGISTRATE has told a Port Campbell man who drove at 150kmh along the Princes Highway near Illowa while twice the alcohol limit to sell his V8 Holden Commodore.
Justin Leigh Primmer, 25, of Tregea Street, pleaded guilty in the Warrnambool Magistrates Court to drink-driving, speeding and failing to appear on bail.
The court was told that at 8.06pm on February 25 Primmer was driving his blue Commodore eastward between Dennington and Port Fairy when he was caught driving at 150kmh.
A breath test later recorded a blood-alcohol reading of 0.102.
Primmer told police he was travelling at such a high speed because he had just overtaken a truck.
Defence counsel Amanda Chambers said Primmer travelled from Port Campbell to Koroit daily to work as a concreter.
She said Primmer was caught drink-driving after drinks which turned into a three-hour session on a Friday night.
Ms Chambers said that since then Primmer's girlfriend had to drive him to and from work, four hours a day, as well as work her two part-time jobs.
Magistrate Jonathan Klestadt said Primmer was before the court in November 2006 when he lost his licence for six months.
He said that experience should have sent a clear message to the defendant about the consequences of drink-driving.
Primmer, however, offended again seven months after getting his licence back.
Mr Klestadt said the community was sick and tired of seeing appalling car crash images in the media after vehicles were involved in high-speed collisions.
He said Primmer was an accident looking for somewhere to happen and another court appearance for similar offending would lead to a jail term.
Primmer was convicted and fined $3000, ordered to serve seven days in prison, which was suspended for two years, and had his licence cancelled for 30 months.
