Log days are here again

SOME musicians end up gaining a mythic quality or an air or mystery that's bigger than their music and one such muso is definitely Bob Log III.

Perhaps better known for his onstage antics and get-up than he is his songs or his down-and-dirty blues sound, the story of Log really started by pure accident 16 years ago when his old band Doo Rag was supporting Ween on their 12 Golden Country Greats tour.

A couple of shows into the tour, his drummer bailed, leaving Log with a whole tour to complete minus percussion.

"I was talking to Ween about what I was going to do," he explained.

"I had a helmet in my car... that I bought to wear on my motorbike... and I told Ween I was just going to put the helmet on my head while I played and kick my guitar case (for a drum sound).

"Sheer panic is the mother of all invention, whether you're a one man band or you're making an atomic bomb."

The helmet remains an iconic part of the Bob Log III stage show. It now has a telephone received built into it for a microphone and the guitar case has been replaced by a small bass drum, while the performance also usually includes playing with a member of the audience (or three) sitting on his lap.

"I like bands like AC/DC and Screaming Jay Hawkins, and it's not only that the music's cool... you know, it doesn't sound better when Screaming Jay puts a bone through his nose with pieces of paper on it that are on fire, but that's something to talk about. That's the school of rock I went to.

"Lots of bands want to stand just there and be boring, and that's fine if that's what you want to do, but it's not usually what the people that come to my shows want to see or what I go to see."

Log's shows certainly do get people talking. His previous Warrnambool gigs (he's done either two or three, he can't recall) had plenty of people talking and much anticipation has greeted his return, which happens at The Loft on Saturday night with support from local one-man band SS Radio.
