Man dead after suspected hotel gas leak

11 Mar, 2010 12:30 PM
A MAN has died at Birregurra's Royal Mail Hotel after a suspected gas leak.

The 54-year-old man collapsed while working in the cellar of the hotel around 7.30am today.

A 45-year-old delivery man was up on a ladder when the 54-year-old man collapsed as a strong odour of gas filled the cellar.

The delivery man called triple-zero and firefighters arrived in specialist breathing gear to pull the hotel staffer's body from the cellar.

Paramedics performed CPR but the man couldn't be revived and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Ambulance Victoria spokesman John Mullen said the delivery man was taken to the Colac Hospital for observation because of the possibility of a gas leak.

Police have not confirmed how the man died and a report will be prepared for the coroner.

WorkSafe investigators are heading to the scene.
