Benjamin Northey conductor
Jeffrey Crellin oboe
ROSSINI The Barber of Seville: Overture
HAYDN Oboe Concerto
DVORÁK Symphony No. 6
One of Australia's brightest talents Benjamin Northey, conducts the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra in this delightful program, which begins with one of the sprightliest and most popular of operatic overtures.
The MSO's Principal Oboe, Jeffrey Crellin, is soloist in a beautiful classical work which is, arguably, the earliest really well-known concerto written for the instrument. Dvořák's tender, captivating Sixth Symphony, which concludes the program, has a personality unique to this most lovable of composers: a gentle, lovely lyricism in its adagio; a fiery vigour straight out the composer’s Slavonic Dances in the scherzo and a pervasive open-air quality that envelops its opening movement.
