When a ute is stolen... or not

TA: We all make embarrassing mistakes but we hate to be found out.

AT: Sounds like you might have a bit of gossip on someone.

TA: Appears high profile Timboon bricklayer Frank Tongi found himself in an embarrassing situation. Tongi had 30 minutes to spare the other day, so he marched into the Timboon Hotel for two light beers and a couple of bets. When his time was up he walked out the front door of the pub, but the next minute he rushed back in screaming that his work ute had been stolen. Tongi instructed bar staff to report the ute stolen. The next minute one of the patrons left the pub, only to return and ask Tongi if he had driven the family sedan, which was parked across the road, instead of his trusty work ute. A very embarrassed Tongi was spotted minutes later climbing into the sedan and meekly driving away.

AT: Speaking of the Timboon Hotel, publican Graeme Welsh and Warrnambool’s Victoria Hotel publican Brian “Pixie” Gleeson are getting ready with their trainer, David “Butch” Londregan, to try and place their names into racing history.

TA: It will be memorable if that distinguished trio is involved.

AT: Butch is taking a horse called Track Wiz, which they part-own, over to a steeplechase at Oakbank today. It’s the first step in Track Wiz’s campaign to try and win some of the feature jumping races on the calendar.

TA: It would be an amazing feat if Butch could train Track Wiz to win the Warrnambool Grand Annual. He won the race four times as a jockey and no horseman has managed the Grand Annual as both a jockey and later as a trainer.

AT: I think it’s in the back of their minds that this year might be the last one for jumps racing, so they would love to win the Grand Annual. I filled in doing sport this week, decided to give the crooks a break, and I’ve been stunned by how little support Racing Victoria is giving jumps racing. First we had delay after delay before we were told that jumps racing was back on. There’s no way there will be many new horses jumping this season, so how will the jumps fraternity be able to meet one of the key performance indicators, which is the number of starters?

TA: Good point. I’ve got a bit of interesting footy gossip. Reliable sources have informed me that former Warrnambool player Justin Eales, who played in a premiership side with Penshurst last year, might have found a new football home at Stawell.

AT: There’s a few interesting moves in local footy as well, with former star junior Sam Mahony heading from South to play with mate Chris Bant at Panmure. Sam Dunbar will be a big loss from Cobden as he's heading to Gippsland, and Kolora-Noorat has signed a gun on-baller in David Corrigan from Kyabram. I also need to clarify that Chris Carmody is not the Hampden league’s marketing man but a valued executive member.

TA: We must also give our good mate and avid reader Bernie Kelly a mention. Hope he has a happy 70th birthday tomorrow and backs a few winners to mark the occasion.

AT: I might spot him in the Koroit Street TAB after his rounds tomorrow. Until next week, hooroo.
