Cycling - not always good for your health

TA: Former Hampden Football Netball League president Michael Lucas has been in the wars.

AT: Don’t tell me the punters have taken to him in his role as one of the faces of Warrnambool betting firm Boolbet.com

TA: The story goes he took on a parked car when he was riding a bike up near Flagstaff Hill on Saturday morning.

AT: What, is he in training for the Melbourne to Warrnambool bike race?

TA: You’re joking. I reckon he was only riding around the block in his lyrical colours when he crashed into the parked car. Witnesses say he was knocked unconscious and suffered a broken arm, black eye and took a lot of bark off his body. The ambulance carted him up to the hospital and he was kept in until 6.30pm.

AT: Story goes Lucas was not the only bean counter to come to grief on his bike. Sinclair Wilson numbers man Peter McMillan played golf over at Port Fairy and headed up town on his trusty bike to have a meal and a few drinks at The Stump. Unfortunately after leaving the pub he fell from his bike. He is also minus plenty of bark and had a good dose of shock.

TA: His golf didn’t improve during the week. McMillan and a group of mates including Tony Grace, Greg Kelly, Ashley King, Martin Kavanagh and Nick Rule headed over to Tasmania to play a few rounds at Barnbougle and enjoy the good life. Insiders say McMillan blamed the Port Fairy fall for his ordinary performance in the Apple Isle.

AT: Brisbane Lions superstar Jonathan Brown has never forgotten his links with this area. What’s he been up to?

TA: Brownie has helped out many local community groups by sending them autographed jumpers of the Brisbane Lions and other footy memorabilia to raise money for the groups, plus he’s been a great one to go to local events when he comes back home. The big bloke has sent down eight brand new footballs for the Emmanuel College Sports Academy. Brownie might not have been the best student at Emmanuel but he has helped them out over the years. Brownie’s dad Brian brought the footballs back the other day after a quick trip up to Brisbane when he dropped daughter Gabriella at Brisbane University, where she is going to study business education. While Brian was up there with wife Mary they were needed for domestic duties after Jonathan’s wife Kylie nearly severed a tendon on her right hand after trying to juggle young daughter Olivia and a glass bottle which had dropped onto the kitchen bench. She was rushed to hospital to get some stitches in the nasty wound.

TA: It would be remiss of us if we didn’t acknowledge the passing of Leo Howard in Warrnambool last Saturday. Incredible bloke. He was so positive in everything he did.

AT: I can still remember the article you did on Leo when you put him Under The Auld Pump about two years ago. Leo was a brilliant sportsman and a top bloke. He had a huge funeral. Deepest sympathies are extended to Teresa, his wife of 64 years, and their family.

TA: What else has been going on around town?

AT: Well I’m told last week’s Blue Diamond racing coverage had an unusual highlight with a local link. Just as the young horses were being loaded into the barriers well-known Warrnambool barrier attendant Graeme Hoy was spotted on the television coverage doing some crucial gear changes of his own.

TA: What do you mean by that?

AT: Well it’s a high pressure job dealing with some of the most expensive young horses in the country and getting ready for a $1 million race and let’s say Kamma wasn’t as comfortable as he wanted to be so he made an adjustment. Similar to another famous gear change by cricketer Kyle Humphrys in a Warrnambool Subaru TV ad with Jordan Lewis. The Hoy family had a good day as young Liam, who has a surprisingly deep voice, won the racing quiz on 3YB and picked up a slab on Saturday morning.

TA: Footy news. I hear that a Hampden league club could be losing a few netballers.

AT: We’ll just have to wait and see. East Warrnambool is pretty short of footballers so anyone wanting a kick should give Matty Scoble a ring. Jarrod Thompson is heading back to South and Danny Chatfield and Justin Chalmers head Creek’s list of recruits, along with Aaron Searle.

TA: I hear that Bushfield legend Jimmy Williams is not enjoying the best of health and we wish him all the best. Until next week, hooroo.
