TA: Koroit’s most loyal football fan Bernie “Pussy” Murray will celebrate his 60th birthday later this month. Pussy has worked behind the scenes at the club for years and he’s been a key volunteer at the Koroit Football Netball Club bingo on Thursday nights. Sources say the fund-raiser is on its last legs and the Saints might look at having teas again on Thursday nights instead of bingo.
AT: Pussy is also one of the club’s loudest supporters. A good present might be another big echo blaster radio. I’ll never forget years ago when Ronnie Wearmouth was coaching Port Fairy, Ronnie was in the coaching box at Koroit and Pussy put his big echo blaster radio on full bore on top of the coaching box. Ronnie jumped out of the box screaming at Pussy who gave the former Collingwood legend a sensational serve. Speaking of 60th birthday parties, is there any truth to the rumour that you got an invite to abs owner Colin McKenna’s last Saturday night?
TA: Great night. A highlight were the speeches by two of McKenna’s loyal lieutenants Alan “Titch” Grieve and Leon “Coey” McCluskey. Heard you also had a big week, but it must have been disappointing to have missed out on going to the big game at the MCG.
AT: NSW versus Victoria one-dayer with a Warrnambool school cricket academy. I thought I would be right to go even though eldest daughter Rebecca went into labour that morning. I knew I was in plenty of bother when the Bride told me she was sure I would make the right decision. Warning bells went off and I stayed at home. The boys kept me informed about the cracker game of cricket all day and baby Bailey James had to endure a 20-hour labour, so Wednesday was a washout.
TA: The words of my late uncle Kevin Smith, who passed away this week, ring firmly in my ears. He used to say there were two rules for long relationships. The first one is blokes must listen and the second one is they must do as they are told. It sounds like you are following those guidelines.
AT: There’s talk that the super 8s cricket at Merrivale was a big day last weekend.
TA: When you say big, just how do you determine the success of the day?
AT: The Merrivale bar ran out of refreshing beverages. That would be a first.
TA: Apparently David Turner has taken over the lease to the Liebig Street shop that used to be occupied by Toyworld. One local business and three national businesses have already made inquiries about the vacant shop. Another bit of news comes out of Materia’s. It’s supposed to be a secret but one of the workers purchased a great Valentine’s Day present for his lovely wife. I can’t say what it is but it’s blue and has wheels.
AT: Well-known South Warrnambool property steward Ian Sloane is back on his feet and firing after a heart turn during the off-season. A big cuddle from Noel Mugavin during the week wouldn’t have helped but Sloany is back where he belongs — in the Rooster rooms giving cheek.
TA: Much else going on?
AT: Danny O’Keefe is set to be joined at Geelong’s VFL club by another talented local, Sam Boyd. Until next week, hooroo.
