 A microwave of explosions

A microwave of explosions

AT: Masterchef addicts are firing up in kitchens across the south-west and the bug has now bitten your old mate Brian “Nut” McMahon.

TA: I didn’t know that Nut was a cook.

AT: Apparently Margaret is still overseas but Nut has watched her cook eggs in the microwave many times and he thought he could venture into the unknown and cook his own. But after five minutes in the microwave all hell broke lose when there was an explosion. Insiders say Nut was terribly shaken by the noise which sounded like an earthquake. He was worried the microwave may have suffered irreparable damage but after overcoming his fears and inspecting the damage he realised the appliance would just need a very good clean.

AT: I caught a glimpse of The Footy Show on Thursday night and I was stunned the show was having so much problems with its lighting.

TA: I never watched the show but I was flicking channels and can shed some light on the problems. Apparently the light was bouncing off Port Fairy businessman’s Michael Steel’s head in the front row. I had a chat with him the other day and I noticed his hair line was receding at a rapid rate.

AT: Our favourite waterboy has also been in the wars. Young Eddie White happily took on the chief duties at Allansford this year and last week was responding to a player’s urgent refreshment needs when disaster struck. Young Eddie stumbled over the water bottles and went down but he claims to have bounced off the ground and looked after the player’s requirements. He was also planning big outing last night at a singles night at the Lady Bay so if you see him just ask if he had any luck.

TA: The boys down at Warrnambool’s Boolbet have been busy over the past week taking bets on Geelong to win the flag after the Cats thrashed Collingwood last Friday night. Over the past few weeks the Cats have been backed in from $4.50 to $2.80.

AT: I heard the Boolbet boys were licking their wounds after what was a disastrous Warrnambool May carnival for all bookies.

TA: They’re over that speed hump. Former South Warrnambool footballer Jonathan Brown has drifted dramatically in the betting for this year’s Brownlow Medal. A few weeks ago he was rated an $8 chance but since his recent form slump he’s drifted out to $40. All the money for the Brownlow has been on Fremantle big man Aaron Sandilands. He was at $125 and now he is $20. The boys are also betting on the final of the Australian sprintcar title in Darwin tonight.

AT: More than 40 blokes took part in the annual golf day organised by Warrnambool physiotherapist Tony Grace yesterday. No invite but I did get a phone call as the blokes left early yesterday morning. It was going to be a long day because they were playing at a little golf course between Melton and Ballarat. I’m sure a few would have been worse for wear when they got home. Talking about people having big days, what about the owners of the Warrnambool Cup winner Hissing Sid?

TA: I have noticed Sid is running in the $125,000 Premier’s Cup at Doomben today, along with stablemate Baughurst.

AT: I think you’ll find the owners of Hissing Sid relived the Warrnambool Cup win at a popular nightspot and managed to watch the horse win more than 40 times. Some say that the DVD has been played that many times it’s now thin and has to be handled with care. Story goes part-owner Mandy King slipped over when carrying the cup out of the night spot. No damage to the cup but sources were worried Mandy might have injured a tendon in the tumble.

TA: Great to hear that former champion footballer and avid column reader Jack Bartlett is back home after a stint at St John of God Hospital.

AT: Jack was a champion player for South Warrnambool before going out to be playing coach at Koroit. I reckon he still holds the record for selling the most Ford cars in the district.

TA: I would love a dollar for each Ford he sold. Staff up at St John Of God were amazed how many visitors Jack had when he was in hospital. Patricia and Jack have been married for more than 55 years and Pat is starting to get the celebrations organised for Jack’s big 90 in November.

AT: On to sports gossip and there’s plenty of talk about a high-profile Koroit player possibly being deregistered if he gets found guilty through an investigation. I heard about one case in northern Victoria this year involving a player who had reached the benchmark of being suspended for 16 games. That player was given one more chance to play on appeal. In cricket news, Justin Caveny looks like heading from Koroit to Dennington and new Woodford coach John Houston might have been a little bit liberal with the truth claiming to be 40 when he was appointed this week. Hooter is 42 and will be 43 in September. The much sought-after batsman David Tucker looks likely to stay with Wesley CBC. In other whispers K. M. Lynch Wine and Spirit Merchants in Fairy Street has been sold.

TA: More importantly, the column will have a new sponsor next week with Craig and Nicole Hood, from The Hub in Port Fairy, jumping onboard. Until next week, hooroo.
