Whirlwind innings leaves Tom short of breath

IF Tom McKenzie knew what score he would post in South West Cricket's Twenty20 knockout series, he would've done a bit of fitness work before the weekend.

The Terang opener belted an unbeaten 118 in round one of the series against Boorcan on Saturday.

He revealed it was a whirlwind innings.

"I have no idea how many fours or sixes I got," he said.

"It all went pretty quick."

He confessed he struggled towards the end of the 20 overs.

"I was pretty stuffed," he laughed.

"The intensity really goes up in Twenty20. I was lucky because I got dropped a couple of times near the end."

Captain Jay Wynd couldn't accuse the 22-year-old of not giving him what he wanted.

"Wyndy wanted me and the other opener Liam Venn to stay out there for six overs," McKenzie said.

"He wanted about 150." Terang posted 4-197. Boorcan replied with 78.

WARRNAMBOOL and District Cricket Association (WDCA) has a one-in-three chance of hosting the 28th Australian Country Cricket Championships in January 2012.

Three other regional centres - Geelong, Cobram-Barooga and Ballarat - were in the running to host the titles but Ballarat pulled out.

WDCA president Robert Haberfield, general manager Keith Ellerton and administration and finance chairman Neil Nelson are in Albury at the 2010 championships.

"For part of the application, it was suggested it would be advantageous to have a look at how the championships are run in Albury," Haberfield said.

"We're checking the facilities, seeing how things are set-up and we might pick-up a few ideas.

"When we get home we'll start work on our official proposal."

The WDCA will submit its full submission by mid-April.

DON'T believe everything you read - on bingo machines that is.

A local pub which sponsors two clubs from different associations houses their respective fund-raising bingo machines.

One club recently became cash-strapped while the other club cash-packed.

It was due to an "out of order" sign being stuck on one machine despite it working perfectly fine.

The friendly sabotage was rumoured to be because the club took the other club's machine spot by the bar.

The victim is yet to seek revenge.

IT had been a long time between celebratory drinks for Brierly Christ Church. That was before the Bulls' Twenty20 victory on Sunday which qualified them for the Twenty20 Cup finals.

The triumph over Nestles prompted a Sunday session which reportedly turned wild.

Brierly captain-coach Nathan Murphy left the clubrooms about 1pm when it was still relatively tame.

The skipper didn't mind his teammates unwinding.

"We haven't had much success the last few weeks so I was happy for them to have a drink," Murphy quipped.

THE revamped Colts Country Week format was a winner, with the last day changes set to stay.

Rather than risk an undefeated team losing on percentage like the last two years, a final between the top two teams was introduced.

South West and Warrnambool Blue played off in the decider, with Blue ending its neighbouring association's undefeated run.

WDCA junior committee chairman Gordon McLeod said there were plenty of positives about the week such as the kind weather, holding Twenty20 matches on the final day to decide placings, impressive turf pitches and the barbecue at the division one WDCA Twenty20 game.

The only negative was having a bye in division two.

Casterton took out the inaugural spirit of cricket award.

DENNINGTON and Russells Creek didn't have a reason to celebrate after their tie on Saturday but both teams can boast a couple of small victories.

The Dogs are back to full-strength, with captain-coach Glenn Skinner (illness) and all-rounder Dustin Drew (hand) now 100 per cent after spending some time on the sidelines.

Creek has welcomed back Sri Lankan Shanaka Perumpuli to strengthen its line-up, with the batsman to play out the rest of the season.
