No time to celebrate big century

SMASHING 180 runs is a good reason for a celebration but all Joe Holloway could do after knocking his career best score on Sunday was have one beer. The Allansford cricketer had to hit the road after his blistering performance in the division four match against Russells Creek at Mack Oval. “I had to go back to Wagga for uni,” he said. “I went back Sunday night so I could only have one beer.” The agricultural science student’s previous best score was 99, which he hit a couple of years ago. He described Sunday as “a pretty good day”. “We only lost two wickets in 40 overs, which wasn’t too bad,” he recalled. “After I got to 100, everything went pretty quick.” Included in the 22-year-old’s 180 were 15 fours and a pair of sixes. No other division four side needs to worry about being on the receiving end of a Holloway smash again this season as he doubts he will get back to the south-west to line up in any more matches.

NICK Kermond’s hat-trick in Grassmere Cricket Association B grade on Saturday was calculated. “I had a bit of a plan for the third ball,” he said. “The lad coming in was Paul Lumsden, who I’ve played a lot of A grade cricket against over the years. I knew he would be expecting a fuller ball so I bowled a shorter one and

he deflected it down leg side. It was caught. The first two balls were bowled.” Kermond grabbed four wickets in five balls to help Wangoom to a win over Killarney and keep its finals chances alive. While the top two B grade teams are locked in, three teams are fighting for the remaining two finals spots. Saturday marked the second hat-trick in Kermond’s career. “I got one 17 years ago,” he said. “I’ve played cricket for 20 years. Quite often you’ll get two wickets in a row. You always try your hardest to get the third one but you don’t really expect to get it.”

THERE was nothing funny about comedian Andrew Startin’s dismissal on day four at Melbourne Country Week. The man who is able to imitate the likes of Sam Newman and Bruce McAvaney knocked 112 on the opening day in division three for Benalla and District Cricket Association. He had no impact at the crease when he came up against South West Cricket last Thursday as he was dismissed for a duck.

LUCKY the cut-off for pranks on April Fool’s Day is noon. Grassmere Cricket Association is holding its presentation night on April 1 at Proudfoots, where it will name its cricketer of the year. Warrnambool and District Cricket Association is yet to confirm the date for its night of nights while South West Cricket will hold its presentation on March 15 at Noorat Recreation Centre.

OLD Ararat Road and Karabeal Krickets will battle it out in tomorrow evening’s Street Cricket grand final at Dunkeld. Organisers are hoping to break the event’s record crowd of 220, with spectators encouraged to wear a touch of blue to support the beyondblue foundation. The Indian Skies will entertain the crowd with live music.

GRASSMERE Cricket Association’s finalists have been decided, with Purnim finishing on top of the ladder. It will play clubmate Purnim Bulls in one semi-final, while Hawkesdale will take on Panmure Pups in the other. The Grassmere ladders are:
