Like father, like son

LIKE father, like son. But unfortunately for Lachlan Morrison, doing something which Dad did just over two decades ago wasn't exactly the sincerest form of flattery. The Port Fairy division two cricketer suffered a diamond duck, just like his father Dan did in 1988 while playing for Terang against Boorcan. Their reaction to the undesirable situation was the opposite. While Lachlan walked off Avery's Paddock graciously on Saturday, Dan ran from the Boorcan cricket ground to the Princes Highway and back to blow off some steam. Someone who witnessed both dismissals noted how strange it was that while most cricketers will endure their entire career without a diamond duck, the father and son are both able to claim one.

WARRNAMBOOL and District Cricket Association (WDCA) will aim to defend the Cross Border Cup on Sunday. The task won't be easy as Mount Gambier and District Cricket Association boasts a formidable line-up. Several of its players have represented South Australia's country team, the SA Outbacks, while others have played South Australian district cricket. The WDCA team includes Brett Eldridge, Kyall Timms, Brad Sheen, Ryan O'Keefe, Tom Batten, Jason Mungean, Andrew Giblin, Gault McCluggage, David Tucker, Anthony Chirnside and Gavin Rogers. Glenn Skinner is coach. Players to depart from Reid Oval at 8am Sunday. The match is at Mount Gambier's Frew Park. It begins at 11am.

BRIERLY insiders are claiming a weekend of clean, country air helped prepare their former star Matthew Love for a run-fest in the Victorian Sub District Cricket Association last weekend. Love had returned to Warrnambool for a family celebration and helped out at Brierly's Milo in2Cricket session the weekend before last and after a series of serviceable knocks for Yarraville, hit top form on the weekend, making 90 on Saturday against Ormond and an unbeaten 93 on Sunday as he led his side in a successful run chase at Werribee. Needing 173 to win in 45 overs, Love opened the batting and was still there when his side reached the tally with three overs to spare. He said he had no regrets that once the tally was ticked off, the game ended, ruining his chances of getting a ton. On Saturday, he and captain coach Tim McRae shared a 175-run opening stand, breaking a 61-year-old club record. After making 183 runs at an average of 183 for the weekend, Love has now scored 308 runs at 51 for his new club, having stepped back from Premier League club Footscray Edgewater. "I don't think I have ever had a weekend like that making 183 runs and having two wins," Love said. "I was a bit sore on Monday." He won't get much rest this weekend either, being selected in the VSDCA representative side to take on a Country Victoria XI at Brunswick on Sunday.

BRAUER College is the favourite to take out the inaugural schools-based girls' competition. The last round will be played at Purnim Recreation Reserve this afternoon. If Brauer was to defeat Camperdown/Cobden/Terang, which it is expected to do, it will be crowned the competition's inaugural champion and gain the 2009 Essendon Maribynong Ladies Cricket Shield. The other match sees the winless Mortlake clash against Emmanuel College, which is looking to bounce back after its 58-run loss to Brauer last week.

FORMER Australian spinner Ray Bright will be at Mack Oval on January 26 and 27 passing on tips. He heads the coaching panel for Shaun Brown's Australia Day Country Cricket Clinic, with Geoff Dymock - who played 21 Tests for Australia - also making the trip. Brown said the clinics were for cricketers aged 6 to 16. "Our program covers all facets of cricket and is aimed at improving participant's skills, knowledge and enjoyment of the game," he said. The Mount Gambier team includes Michael McGurk, Keiran Ashby, Dion Stratford, Gavin Coon, Byron Cleaver, Nathan Smith, David Somerfield, Bray Stephenson, George Kidman, Richard Crute, Lachlan Jones and Scott Allen.
