Hit the spot, win a ute

Hit the spot, win a ute

WE all know car dealers like to sell cars, but giving one away seems far-fetched.

Not for Warrnambool's Clinton Baulch, who has put an Isuzu ute up for grabs at the Twenty20 Cup.

If a batsman in the Australia Day grand final hits one of the two Clinton Baulch spots, they get the ute. Baulch will be at Allansford watching the final but rather than biting his nails and praying the ball stays away from the spot, he said he'll be hoping it hits the target.

So does he think it's achievable?

"Absolutely," he said. "It's happened before in state league cricket so it can happen here."

The competition's major sponsor, Sungold, is also being generous by offering $100 for crowd catches and $1000 to the batsman who hits the Sungold spot in the quarter or semi-finals.

TRAINING for Warrnambool and District Cricket Association's (WDCA) Melbourne Country Week squad will be held at Reid Oval next Wednesday at 6pm.

Co-coach Ben Boyd expects the team to be finalised in the next fortnight.

GRASSMERE Cricket Association (GCA) has announced its initial Country Week squad.

It will train on February 3 and 10 at Wangoom.

Any players who are unavailable should contact team manager Norm Gibson on 0412 722 311 or Nick Kermond on 0428 611 972.

The squad is Greg Bull, Aaron Peterson, Chris Smith, Shaun Griffin (Purnim), Shamus O'Beirne (Wangoom), Rob Bleumink, Jethro Serle, Steve Edwards (Mailors Flat), Brian Wilson, Daniel Oakley (Yambuk), Liam Cole (Killarney), James McKinnon, Chris Bant, Sam Mahony, Tim Bryce, Nathan Shand, Daniel Meade and Simon Bourke (Panmure).

FILLING the stands with supporters for the Western Waves under 18 girls' grand final will be impossible but it doesn't mean they're not going to try.

Waves regional manager Stephen Field has put the call out for people to support the girls at the MCG in their quest for back-to-back state titles.

Monday will mark the first time a Waves team has played on the hallowed turf.

"The girls get to do what many of us only dream of and play on the centre wicket of the MCG," Field said.

"This may be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the players and for supporters of cricket in the region to cheer our girls on to glory."

The Waves take on Inner East Emus.

STEPHANIE Townsend will be presented with a Future Stars Award tomorrow.

The talented Warrnambool teenager, who had a stellar under 18 national titles after being judged joint player of the carnival, will become the first Waves player to achieve the honour.
